AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between epidemiological and
clinical data with the survival of AIDS patients. METHODS: Retrospective
study of 40 adult patients with AIDS seen in the private practice since
1985 until their death. Age of infection, sex, risk behaviour, CD4 cell
count were evaluated as well as the use or not of antiretroviral
therapy. RESULTS: The data of infection could not be precisely
determined. The mean time of progression from diagnosis of HIV infection
by serology and full blown AIDS were 18 months. All of the patients were
men, homo or bisexual; 15 of them have not taken antiretroviral
treatment. The survival (median) of the patients that had not taken
antiretroviral therapy was 20 months. The ones who had taken treatment
(n = 25)-ZDV monotherapy on association with ddI, ddC survived for 26.8
months (median). CONCLUSIONS: In spite of the small number of patients
this study shows that with the indication of treatment with
antiretrovirals, according to the orientation given in Brazil in
patients with ARC and/or CD4 cell count less than 300 cells/mm3, there
was an increase on the survival in 6.8 months plus improvement in the
quality of life.
